Rail Network

MKA Ecology has staff trained under the Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification scheme. The certification allows us to apply our wide range of ecological services within land defined as “lineside” within Network Rail controlled land. This is specialised work and very few ecological consultancies offer the number of trained ecologists with PTS certification that we do.

We can provide the rail network with a full service from original baseline surveys, through evaluation and impact assessment of the proposed development, to design, licensing and implementation of mitigation.

Much of the ecological work that we carry out for the industry is baseline surveys for protected species. These are usually undertaken in response to planned engineering works or works affecting station buildings or other built structures along the line.

Lineside areas can be rich in flora and fauna. The most common protected species encountered in these situations are reptiles, bats, badgers and breeding birds.

We aim to provide a high quality service to the rail network and to find practical and sustainable ecological solutions.

Our services to the rail network

  • We have staff trained under the Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification scheme.
  • We undertake baseline and more specific habitat and species surveys.
  • We can offer advice on all aspects of protected species legislation and nature conservation.
  • We deal with necessary licence applications for work involving protected species and liaise with the appropriate regulatory bodies on your behalf.
  • We design and implement mitigation strategies if they are required.

Wind Energy Industry

MKA Ecology can provide clients in the renewables industry with a full service of ecological assessment in relation to wind energy developments. This ranges from feasibility studies, detailed survey work through to Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA). We now have an extensive track record in producing concise and effective Environmental Statement chapters for wind energy developments.

We also hold extensive experience in Studies to Inform Appropriate Assessments for wind energy developments in addition to monitoring work and the design and implementation of mitigation.

We have extensive experience in ecological assessments of proposed wind farms and have worked on 13 wind farm schemes in England and Wales in the last two years.

MKA Ecology’s in-house ornithologists have widespread survey experience in the sector, ensuring that any survey data collected is of a high accuracy. The quality and reliability of the data is critical if it is to be used in collision risk analysis for impact assessment of wind turbines.

We are one of the few consultancies that is capable of undertaking bat surveys at altitude, using an AnaBat set-up with a microphone placed at height on either a meteorological mast or equivalent. This critically evaluates whether bat activity is occurring at the altitude of proposed wind turbine blades, and allows an informed impact assessment to be undertaken.

We can provide the wind energy industry with a professional service using our experience and up to date technology.

Our services to the wind energy industry

  • We undertake habitat and species-specific surveys.
  • We undertake ecological impact assessments for all species and habitats, including specialized input on birds and bats.

  • We carry out and produce effective EcIA and Appropriate Assessment studies.
  • We design and implement mitigation strategies for all protected species.
